Introducing types of edge computing devices.
User Devices. Such as smart phones or wearable. Wearable for example is Apple Watch.
Local Devices. Such as surveillance camera or a censor monitoring temperatures.
Customer Edge Devices. Such as automatically driven automobiles, robots used in manufacturing factories, drone aircraft.
Location Edge Devices. Such as equipment in the building indicating a location.
What kind of applications for the edge devices?
Regarding IoT, the main use is in manufacturing. The purpose is to ensure that there is no problem in the products manufactured, to detect in advance any manufacturing equipment which is likely to break down soon, or if there is any unused, underutilized equipment and at the same time there is not enough equipment in the other places, notify such a situation exists.
Regarding automatically navigated automobiles. There recently are a lot of traffic accidents caused by senior drivers. If there is an edge device which can detect there is something wrong with the driving of a driver, for example, the device can put a brake to stop the car and prevent an accident.
Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. Such as extraordinary experience in the file “Avatar”
Agriculture. There is a Japanese TV drama called “Shitamachi Rocket” (“Shitamachi” means a downtown in Japanese.) Basically small mom-pop engineering company in downtown Tokyo develops a system which enable automatically navigated farm tractor to operate. In a bad weather, such as in a storm, such a tractor with intelligent device can operate and harvest rice crops without human intervention.
There should be many other examples for the application of edge devices.
